On the last night before Christmas, an old present appears under the tree. Inside, wrapped in tissue, is a little silver crown with a stone as gray as a sparrow, and a card in a hand she knows: “Put it on, little one. There’s a job just for you.”
Then a snow hare named Pom taps at the window. His village, Hollyhush, has been dark for years, and the crown must shine by the last chime of midnight. On the way up the hill, Mia digs out three snowed-in mice, stands up for a little hedgehog, and slows down for an old badger who can’t keep up. Written in read-aloud rhyme for ages 2 to 8.
And on Christmas morning: her crown on the tree, and a letter tucked in the branches.
