The story

A story about getting it wrong, and looking again

Great Dinosaur Mix-Up: page 4
Page 4

Every page here was wrong, and the glass still came through! So a wobbly new drawing could work for me, too!

From page 21

Max hates mistakes. One wobbly leg on a dinosaur drawing, and CRUNCH, into a ball it goes. Then a package arrives from Grandma: an old dinosaur book from long ago, a shiny magnifying glass, and a card with a job to do. “It’s wrong here and there. Can you find the mistakes?”

One peek through the glass, and Max is standing next to a real Brontosaurus. In a misty forest and on a desert nest at sunset, every page of the old book got something wrong, just as scientists once did. Then Max gets something wrong too, and has to find the courage to say sorry, and to draw the way back home, wobbly lines and all. Written in read-aloud rhyme for ages 3 to 7.

  1. Stop 1 · Curiosity The Jurassic valley The old book gave Brontosaurus a boxy head. The real one has a long, low head, and it’s a little grumpy about it.
  2. Stop 2 · Look twice The misty forest The book says T. rex drags its tail, so Max listens for it. The real one doesn’t make a sound.
  3. Stop 3 · Saying sorry The desert nest “EGG THIEF!” says the book, so Max chases it away. Then the eggs hatch. It was a mom.
  4. Stop 4 · Courage The blank page No picture in the book shows home. To get back, Max has to draw it, wobbly lines and all.

Back home, the crumpled drawing gets a brand-new tail: “That’s okay! I can try it once more!”

My son crumples every drawing that isn’t perfect. After this book he smoothed one out and said “I can try it once more!” I nearly cried.

I grew up with Brontosaurus wearing the wrong head too! Reading my letter at the end with my grandson was the best part.

My son loves his book so much! We giggle whenever we flip the pages and see his face on them. It's definitely worth buying and it's something he will treasure forever. :)

Good to know

Questions, answered

Do I see the book before I pay?

Yes. Your free preview shows the cover and the first 4 pages. The rest of the book is painted after you order, and you can ask for changes for 24 hours.

Who is this book for?

One child, boy or girl, ages 3 to 7, painted into the story from one clear photo. Choose Boy or Girl and the story says “he” or “she” all the way through. It’s written as a gift: the person who gives it owned the old dinosaur book in the story.

Are the dinosaur mix-ups real?

Yes, every one. Brontosaurus wore the wrong head for about 100 years, museums showed T. rex dragging its tail until the 1990s, and Oviraptor was named “egg thief” in 1924, long before scientists found it was guarding its own eggs. Page 30 tells the true stories, for grown-ups too.

How many previews can I make?

Up to 5 a day. Changing the name, Boy or Girl, who it’s from, who’s at home or the dedication paints a new preview, so check the spelling before you start.

What kind of photo works best?

A clear, front-facing photo of your child in good light, with nothing covering the face. A phone photo is perfect. If a photo doesn’t work, we’ll ask you for another before anything is printed.

What goes in the “From” box?

The way Max says your name: Grandma, Nana, Grandpa Joe, or a pair like Nana & Pop. It signs the dedication on page 1, the card in the package on page 3 and the letter on page 29. From two of you, the card says “It was ours long ago” and the letter says “we”.

And “Who’s at home”?

The grown-up who waits at home, the way Max says it: Mom, Dad, Mama, or Mom and Dad. They cheer Max on at the kitchen table on page 2, worry when it gets dark on page 18, and give the big hug back home on page 23.

Will it arrive before Christmas?

Order by Dec 14 with standard shipping, or by Dec 18 with express, for delivery by Christmas Eve in the continental US. Any other time of year, every book is printed to order and ships in 3–5 business days.

Can I change something after I order?

Yes, for 24 hours after your order: the name, the photo, who it’s from or the dedication. After that, your book goes to print.

What happens to my photos?

They’re used only to paint your book. We delete them within 30 days of delivery and never sell or share them.
